Get Up and Move – Motivation to Exercise by Coach Karen Roberts

“I know it’s important to exercise but….” Have you heard that one before? I have and coming from my own mouth. What is the motivation to exercise?

Many of us feel that we have to be motivated to exercise before we get up off the couch. The truth is we create our own motivation. The problem is that our motivation seems to disappear when you do get up off the couch. The idea sounded great but….

Well, here are some ideas on really getting motivated.

1) Prepare for the activity.

Make it as easy as possible to follow through such as scheduling the time and having the clothing, shoes and equipment needed. Have everything ready and in place.2) Commitment.

Lack of self-rust comes from breaking commitments to yourself. Keep this commitment. Make it a part of your daily routine. 3) Set goals.

This is good for when you are starting out and after you have been at it for awhile. Set goals that will challenge and increase your ability. 4) Be flexible.

If you were planning on walking at lunch and it’s raining, change your time or go walk in a mall. You can also elect to climb stairs or find a covered place to walk such as a covered parking garage.5) Find a buddy or class.

Having an exercise buddy helps keep you motivated and increases your commitment. It also makes it more enjoyable. When you sign up for a class, you have committed yourself plus there is the opportunity of making some new friends. We are social creatures. 6) Make it fun.

Find an activity you enjoy. Add music. Exercise in front of the TV. Listen to an audio book. You know what you enjoy.7) Reward yourself.

The real reward comes from how you will feel and look after the workout in the long run. However, reward yourself once in awhile with something you enjoy like a massage, pedicure or a good movie.Get up and move. What motivates you today may not work next week. Find different things that motivate you even if it is just that you made a commitment to yourself.
